Doris Lessing.

"I always hated Tony Blair, from the beginning," she said. "Many of us hated Tony Blair, I think he has been a disaster for Britain and we have suffered him for many years. I said it when he was elected, 'this man is a little showman who is going to cause us problems' and he did.

"As for Bush, he's a world calamity. Everyone is tired of this man. Either he is stupid or he is very clever, although you have to remember he is a member of a social class which has profited from wars."

Unashamed Blair confirms his critics' claims on Iraq
Tony Blair has dropped something of a bombshell by admitting that he would have favoured removing Saddam Hussein regardless of any arguments about whether Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

The admission, in an interview being broadcast on the BBC on Sunday, will convince cynics of British and American policy that they were right all along to say this was always about regime change.

"no doubt whatever that the world would be a better place without Saddam."

Simply turning our backs on the issue of weapons of mass destruction is not an option.

"We will do it a sensible way, do it in a measured way, but we cannot allow a state of this nature (Iraq) to develop these weapons without let or hindrance," .

"It is unprecedented for the government to publish this kind of document.
"But in the light of the debate about Iraq and weapons of mass destruction (WMD) I wanted to share with the British public the reasons why I believe this issue to be a current and serious threat to the UK national interest."
"Saddam Hussein is continuing to develop WMD, and with them the ability to inflict real damage upon the region and the stability of the world".

Tony Blair has said Iraq's weapons of mass destruction "may never be found".

Mr Blair said he had "to accept we haven't found them and we may never find them" - but that did not mean Saddam Hussein had not been a threat.

He said the former Iraqi leader had been in breach of UN resolutions and his weapons may have been "removed, hidden or destroyed".

"The problem is I can apologise for the information being wrong but I can never apologise, sincerely at least, for removing Saddam. The world is a better place with Saddam in prison."

And, more clearly than ever before, he insisted all his claims about WMD - including claims Saddam could have launched weapons within 45 minutes - were based on reports by the Joint Intelligence Committee.

"September 11 was terrible, but if one goes back over the history of the IRA, what happened to the Americans wasn't that terrible,”

"Some Americans will think I'm crazy. Many people died, two prominent buildings fell, but it was neither as terrible nor as extraordinary as they think. They're a very naive people, or they pretend to be,"

"Do you know what people forget? That the IRA attacked with bombs against our Government.”

Clare Short

By September 2002, I was feeling increasingly sure that the US and Tony Blair were determined to attack Iraq. It was clear that they were convinced that Saddam Hussein was dedicated to the possession of chemical and biological weapons and would acquire nuclear weapons if he could, though they made clear this would take at least five years. They also believed that he had hidden programmes and probably materials across Iraq.

Robin Cook

‘By February or March, he knew it was wrong. As far as I know, at no point after the end of 2002 did he ever repeat those claims.’

But Hans Blix, who was in charge of the UN team searching Iraq for WMD.

Mr Blair used WMD as a convenient justification for war. Mr Blair's statement had a strong impression of a lack of sincerity.

Conservative MP Richard Ottoway.

Mr Blair's comments are a cynical ploy to soften up public opinion before his appearance at the Iraq Inquiry.

Some MPs may have made a different decision had they known the full unvarnished truth.

Reg Keys, the father of a British soldier killed in Iraq in 2003.

Mr Blair is struggling to find some moral high ground in order to justify the total farce of the Iraq invasion.

Mr Ainsworth
I supported the war in Iraq based on the arguments that were put at the time and a big part of those arguments was - and I firmly believed that they existed - was the existence of WMD at that time.

Sir David Manning, Blair's former foreign policy adviser,

When the prime minister discussed Iraq with President Bush at Crawford [his Texas ranch] in April, he said that the UK would support military action to bring about regime change provided that certain conditions were met: efforts had been made to construct a coalition/shape public opinion.
.
Sir John Sawers, Blair's former chief foreign policy adviser.

Iraq was one of several countries where Britain would have liked regime change. Discussions took place on "political" actions to undermine Saddam, including indicting him for war crimes, Sawers said.
